Getting Started with Sitecore CDP

What is a CDP?

Based on the Customer Data Platform Institute’s definition, a CDP is “A Customer Data Platform is a packaged software that creates a persistent, unified customer database that is accessible to other systems". A CDP has 3 main characteristics: • Prebuilt system that is configured to meet the needs of each client. • Creates a persistent, unified customer database. • Data stored in CDP is accessible and can be used by other systems.

CDPs represent the latest evolution of several marketing technologies over the last few decades. Customer relationship management (CRM) systems which first developed in the 1990s.  Early CRM systems were critical technology for managing a company's relationships and interactions with customers and potential customers. Data management platforms (DMP) came to market in the 2000s and are primarily used in advertising and marketing to build profiles of anonymous individuals. CDP systems now offer marketers unique features that traditional CRM and CDP systems do not. CDPs can ingest data from both CRM and DMP systems and enable bidirectional data transfers between many marketing technology systems.

Sitecore CDP takes the core data management capabilities of a CDP, and layers on top intelligent decisioning, predictive analytics, experimentation, and orchestration.
